| What is Soap made from? | Soap, for bathing and cleaning, can be obtained by treating animal or vegetable fats with lye, an alkaline solution, which causes a chemical reaction called saoponification. In this process fats are broken down and transformed into salts, from the fatty acids, and glycerol (glycerine) which is a component of handmade soaps. Which fatty substances is used to make soap will depend on the application, for handmade soaps olive oil, coconut oil, cocoa butter, palm oil and shea butter. Each of these will produce different results, coconut oil yields a good lather but are quite hard while olive oil yield less of a lather but is more mild. Different soaps can be mixed to give the desired combination of later and hardness.
